Mudras

The mudras serve as the foundation of the bharatnatyam curriculum. Each hand gesture is a symbol that has a deeper meaning. The dancers use these symbols to paint a picture and tell the story behind each dance. Below is a link that depicts each of the mudras with their names and English translations.

Arangetram

A Bharatnatyam arangetram marks the completion of the student's training. Arangetram literally means, “ascending the stage.” After learning Bharatnatyam under the guidance of an accomplished guru, this is the occasion for the proud guru to present her disciples to the public. The Arangetram only takes place when the guru has complete confidence in the aptitude of the student.
